Listen to this article

Salt Lake City Police announced today that 20-year-old Fa Moi Moi, who allegedly attacked an 18-year-old victim Aug. 9 on Capitol Hill’s Churchill Drive, is in custody in Honolulu, Hawaii. In November, the department had placed his name on its “most wanted” list, enabling the creation of a “Joint Criminal Apprehension Team,” or JCAT. Honolulu police apprehended Moi Moi this week. Salt Lake officials will fly to Hawaii and bring Moi Moi back for trialwithin the next few weeks.

ImageChurchill Drive is a popular hangout for teens and college-age young adults. The victim told police that a female with Moi Moi asked if he was gay. When the victim didn’t respond and tried to walk away, he said Moi Moi assaulted him and two other people. The victim has since undergone reconstructive surgery on his orbital bone—the series of seven bones surrounding the eyeball.

Moi Moi is charged with two counts of aggravated assault (a first degree felony) and a hate crime enhancement. If convicted he could face five years to life in prison and a fine of $10,000 for each count.
