Facebook adds new relationship statuses

Facebook is adding civil unions and domestic partnership statuses to the relationship category. Now you can choose to be in a relationship, engaged, married or in a civil union or domestic partnership.

This change has many conservative groups foaming at the mouth. With more than 500 million users, Facebook has more participants than countries have citizens. Facebook has a large impact on what people are exposed to and GLADD, as well as other gay rights organizations, are heralding the move.

Facebook also has liberal employee policies, including offering health benefits for same-sex partners. Along with Google, Facebook will pay the extra taxes accrued with accepting domestic partnership health benefits.

Chris Hughes, one of the co-founders of Facebook, recently became engaged to his partner of five years, Sean Eldridge, who is the political director of Freedom to Marry.

While Facebook may someday take over the world, at least we know they’ll do it in a gay-friendly way.
