Kat DeLuna to showcase new album at Pride

Utah Pride performer, fashonista and pop-star Kat DeLuna told QSaltLake why she’s looking forward to her stay in Utah and what festival-goers can expect from her performance. She’s got the top dance hit in the country, “Dancing Tonight,” and she’ll be showing off some of her new stuff from her yet-to-be-released album and she’s bringing her hottest dancers. Check out her new song, “Drop it Low,” which just came out on iTunes and follow her on Twitter @Katdeluna and on Facebook/Katdeluna.

QSaltLake: Is this your first time in Utah?

Kat DeLuna: No, it will actually be my second or third time visiting. It’s really exciting. I think it’s beautiful, you know, me coming from New York where everything is concrete, I think it’s really beautiful.

QSL: For your Salt Lake fans that haven’t been to one of your shows, what can they expect?

KD: They can expect to have a lot of fun. And everyone should be especially excited because it will be one of the first places to take a look and listen to tracks from my new CD, Viva, which will be coming out this summer. You’ll hear tracks like, “Dancing Tonight,” and “Drop it Low,” which are heating up the dance floors all across the country. There’s always a lot of outrageous outfits and energy. It’s really about having a good time.

Oh and I have really hot dancers. Spread the word because honey, these guys are hot.

QSL: What can you tell us about your upcoming CD, Viva?

KD: Well, this will be my sophomore album, and there are two versions, European and American. And they are two different albums, musically. Viva is like, yay! Viva la Vida! It has Latin instruments, a little bit of Euro-pop and a little bit of funk. Compared to my first album, it’s a little bit different this time around. I have more of a mix. There are some songs that are upbeat, and others that are ballads.

QSL: What’s it like performing for a gay crowd as opposed to a straight crowd?

KD: I’m a very free type of person. No matter what stage or crowd, I’m definitely crazy. But with gay crowds, you can be all the way, extra crazy. It doesn’t matter what you do. People have fun with you; it’s all going to be fabulous. With gay crowds I get to have a more imaginative wardrobe. I think it’s all about having a good time and keeping the sadness away.

QSL: Who are some of your musical influences and favorite performers?

KD: I love Mariah Carey, I love Celine Dion, Selena, so many people. I love Beyonce and then if you want to go back, I’m really inspired by Ella Fitzgerald. I love Aretha Franklin. And I am so in tune with the classical side; Carl Orff and Beethoven. I just love music. As far as fashion goes, I love Jean-Paul Gaultier, Coco Chanel, Christian Dior and so many other people. I love a lot of designers because they really changed up fashion for women.

QSL: Other than music, you’re well known for your fashion, can you describe your style?

KD: I think that fashion is all about expressing yourself and having fun. But my style itself is very viva, very allegre and very fun. I would describe it as the classy girl next door with a little bit of funk. You can catch me in a funky hoody, skinny jeans and a pair of sexy stilettos. Then the next day I might go simple; a white T-shirt, a lot of jewelry and jeans. And sometimes I like to do it up with a beautiful white gown and my hair in a bun. I am inspired by the future and the past.

QSL: Do you have any messages or words of advice for your young gay fans in Utah?

KD: I would definitely say you are who you are. Have faith in yourself, have faith in God. Don’t let anyone put you down. Stand for what you believe in. It’s sad, it really is, but sometimes you’ve got to fight for what you believe in. It’s sad, but fight all the way and don’t give up. I think I have a lot of gay fans because they can identify with my music. Never give up. We don’t know the meaning of the word, “no.” In fact, they should flip that word around and instead of “no,” make it “on,” because baby, “It’s on!”
