75% of pastors believe Mormons are not Christians
Three-quarters of 1,000 American Protestant pastors surveyed by Lifeway Research believe that members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are not Christians. Sixty percent strongly believe that Mormons are not Christians.
The survey asked the pastors: “I personally consider Mormons (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) to be Christians.”
Sixty percent strongly disagreed, 15 percent somewhat disagreed. Just 11 percent somewhat agree, 6 percent strongly agree and 9 percent do not know.
“Though pastors believe overwhelmingly that Mormonism is not Christianity, their opinions should not be confused with personal scorn for Mormons,” said Ed Stetzer, president of Lifeway Research. “A person can respect a religious group and even appreciate their commitment to traditional moral values without equating their beliefs with Christian orthodoxy.”
Two-thirds of pastors who self-identified as Evangelical strongly disagreed that Mormons are Christians, and just 48 percent of Mainline pastors felt that way.
