A Michigan resident was arraigned today on a second felony sex offense after telling police he was HIV positive and was intentionally infecting as many people as he could over the past three years.

Two possible victims have so far been identified, according to police.

David Dean Smith, 51, turned himself in to Grand Rapids police saying he intentionally had unprotected sex.

Court documents say that Smith claimed to have had sex with “thousands” of partners with the intent to kill them by infecting them with HIV.

Health officials issued a warning that “hundreds of people may have been exposed to HIV,” and urged potential victims to be tested.

Police say a female victim was diagnosed with HIV in October, 2008. She said she knew it was Smith, whom she met on a Yahoo! personals site, and who infected her. She called him a “predator” and “sociopath.”

The woman also said that Smith texted her that he was going to turn himself in to the police, saying, “Turning myself in to the law, my life is over. Take care. Always love you.”

Smith’s attorney, Richard E. Zambon, told that he is “concerned about [Smith’s] mental heath.”

Court records show that Smith was admitted recently to a mental hospital for a suicide attempt. The hospital determined Smith was “sexually aroused by causing pain to females.”

The woman granted an interview to NBC station WOOD saying Smith told her he had sex with as many as 3,000 men and women.

“He hits drifters,” the woman told WOOD. “He hits people who are young. He hits young women, and from what I understand, he hits men, too. Those are his targets.”
