Bears looking for top models

Being a bear isn’t always easy. But the Utah Bears are doing their best to showcase some of the sexiest, helpful and talented hairy and full-figured men in the state.

The social organization for bears, who are typically heavy-set and hairy men, and their chasers, is looking for contestants for the annual Mr. Bear Utah and Mr. Cub Utah. The winners of the competition will be ambassadors of the Utah Bears and help spread the word about the organization.

“One of the goals of the Utah Bears is to offer a social atmosphere where bears and those that are interested in bears can come together and feel comfortable,” said Bob Lape, the event organizer. “It’s a great place to meet relaxed guys and to make new friends.”

The Bears are also heavily involved in charitable ventures. From assisting in the Utah Pride Festival to other activities throughout the year, there’s always a good cause to work for, Lape said.

One of the requirements to win the prestigious and sought-after title of Mr. Bear Utah and Mr. Cub Utah include collecting funds for a charity. A portion of the judge’s final decision will revolve around community involvement.

Submissions for the contest are due by March 15, and the contest will be held in May.

“We want everyone to come out and get excited about it. We need contestants and people to cheer them on,” Lape said.

The Utah Bears meet every Wednesday, 6 p.m., at Raw Bean Coffee House, 611 S. West Temple. The group also goes to a restaurant each week after coffee. Another big annual event is the Bear Jamboree – typically held in July- which is a weekend camping trip for the bears and their chasers.
