Queer square dance club launches monthly event
Temple Squares, Utah’s only lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender square dance club will host Square Dance ABC dance parties the fourth Saturday each month, 7-9 p.m., at the Columbus Center, 2498 S. 500 East. The first dance will be held March 24.
Square Dance ABC is an exciting introduction to the world of Modern Western Square Dance. Participants can enjoy a fun, easy beginner square dance with no experience and no commitment needed. Instead of waiting for a class to start, dancers enjoy Square Dance ABC anytime. The A, B and C dances can be experienced in any order. Singles and couples are welcome. Wear comfortable attire.
“Gay square dancing is packed with high energy dancing,” said Ross Lopton, a caller for the Temple Squares, in a press release. “We welcome everyone to give it a try. It’s not what you remember from junior high and definitely not your grandma’s square dancing.”
Dance partners are not necessary and people of all races, religions, gender identities and sexual orientations are welcome.
Temple Squares is a nonprofit square dance club for queers and allies. The Club is a member of the International Association of Gay Square Dance Clubs, the umbrella organization supporting gay and lesbian Modern Western Square Dance clubs in the United States, Canada and Japan. The IAGSDC holds a square dance convention each year in a North American city.
