A North Dakota college football player was booted off his team after kissing his boyfriend in the press box at a game. North Dakota State College of Science student Jamie Kuntz was filming the game against Snow College in Pueblo, Colo. because he had recently suffered a concussion. While filming he shared a kiss with his 65-year-old boyfriend who lives in Denver. Kuntz was later removed from his team and lost his scholarship.
“People around here aren’t exposed to it,” Kuntz told the Associated Press. “People expect gays to be flamboyant, not football players.”
When originally confronted about the kiss, Kuntz told his coach the man was his grandfather, but he later corrected the story. He was dismissed from the team with the “conduct deemed detrimental to the team” category outlined in guidelines in the team’s player’s manual. The coach noted the manual’s section on “lying to coaches, teachers or other school staff.”
Kuntz said he doesn’t believe he was dismissed for lying.
“I know if it was a girl in the press box, or even an older woman, nothing would have happened,” he told the Associated Press. “If it was an older woman, I would have probably been congratulated for it from my teammates.”
His team lost the game, 63-17.
