Iron florist competition will raise funds for LGBT seniors
Ten florists from around the state will compete in the second annual Iron Florist Event at the University of Utah Guest House Fort Douglas Ballroom on Oct. 19, 6 p.m. The event will raise funds for Meals on Wheels to help gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender seniors in Utah.
The competing florists will be allowed to bring no more than $100 (wholesale) worth of flowers and other material to produce the most spectacular arrangement in under 30 minutes. They will also be given a mystery item to incorporate into their design.
The audience will vote by placing their ballots in the bowl of their favorite arrangement. Ballots are $5 and each arrangement will be given to a randomly selected voter at the end of the evening. Other arrangements will be auctioned off at the end of the event. A silent auction will be held to raise more funds for the charity. Donations for the silent auction are being solicited by the Chamber. Please email Derrek at derrek@utahgaychamber.org.
LGBT seniors are at risk in because many do not have children and younger family to care for them in their later years. Many must rely on community services for food and other support. The Utah Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce will be donating to the Meals on Wheels program to assist in the costs involved in being on the program and will host a congregate meal in January with the proceeds of this event.
The catered event is open to members and guests of the group’s Facebook page, the Gay Chamber, SAGE and/or the Utah Pride Center, participating Florists and their guests.
