Listen to this articleQueer Spirit will be hosting a fundraiser to help provide clean drinking water for a village in Ghana on Nov. 10, 2-6 p.m. The first event in a year-long effort will be an African Drumming workshop hosted by Andy Jones.
Queer Spirit is a local nonprofit focusing on serving spiritual needs of gay men through retreats, rituals and communal gatherings. The latest effort is an attempt to raise the $7,000 necessary to drill a well in Kukwaado, Ghana. The community is home to about 300 people, who lack some basic needs, including clean water. The nearest well is an eight-hour walk from the village, said Jerry Buie, a Queer Spirit spokesperson and organizer.
“Because of the efforts to get water the children do not get much formal education, because they are retrieving water, or they are ill because of the water conditions,” Buie said. “These communities raise 5 percent of the cost for the well and depend on people like Queer Spirit to raise money in their behalf. What a beautiful and powerful concept and opportunity for us to mobilize our prayers and efforts to create these funds and resources?”
The fundraiser is open to people of all sexual orientations and gender identities — not just gay men. For more information go to queerspirit.org. There is a suggested donation of $50, but no one will be turned away for lack of funds.
