Hundreds of same-sex couples formed a line from the doors of the Weber Center, through the parking lot and down the drive as Weber County Clerk/Auditor Ricky D. Hatch and Ogden Mayor Mike Caldwell announced that the clerk’s office would open for a brief time today to issue marriage licenses.
Those in line received a letter of apology from Hatch.
“I want to personally apologize for the confusion today,” Hatch wrote. “I intended to open the office on Saturday for logistical reasons — in anticipation of a large volume of marriage applications on Monday. I did not anticipate the security requirements of opening the county building on Saturday and its impact on other tenants of the building. I have also been advised that opening the office for special circumstances outside of normal business hours may violate equal protection provisions.”
“I understand that this is an unprecedented circumstance, and we are doing our best to do the right thing in the right way. We will be fully staffed on Monday to meet the needs of our citizens.”
Some of those in line had waited at the Davis County Clerk’s office and drove to Salt Lake upon realizing the rumor was untrue that they were scheduled to open. Salt Lake County also did not open today.
