News reports that Piute County Clerk is not offering marriage certificates to same-sex couples is partly true. It turns out the clerk left on vacation until the end of the year before the ruling was even handed down.
Piute County Commissioner Darin Bushman tweeted, “never said #PiuteCounty won’t [issue licenses to same-sex couples], our clerk is on vacation until the end of the year. Left prior to the ruling.” He further tweeted, “has nothing to do with ruling, has to do with no clerk!”
The county has a population of 1,556. Piute residents can go to any other county clerk’s office to apply for a license.
