Feds to recognize Utah same-sex marriages

Listen to this article

In a statement today United States Attorney General Eric Holder announced the Obama Administration’s intent to ensure that all marriages performed in Utah are recognized equally by the federal government.

“In the days ahead, we will continue to coordinate across the federal government to ensure the timely provision of every federal benefit to which Utah couples and couples throughout the country are entitled – regardless of whether they in same-sex or opposite-sex marriages,” said Holder.

It was previously reported that Social Security offices in Utah were refusing to allow name changes for same-sex couples, even with a valid marriage certificate.  It is still unclear exactly when the federal benefits of marriage will be fully implemented for Utah’s same-sex couples and their families.

Holder added:  “These families should not be asked to endure uncertainty regarding their status as the litigation unfolds.”
