New to the Utah Arts Festival this year, held June 21–24, is Arts Fest Amplified, a concert series with a fresh take on the evening scene of the festival’s experience with four nights of top music talent on the Amphitheater Stage located in the northeast corner of the festival grounds. It’s a more customized concert experience that includes same-day access to the festival.
Arts Fest Amplified Schedule:
Ron Pope and Gomez, Thurs., June 21, 8 p.m.
Pope co-produced his latest album “Work” with Ted Young, Grammy-award winner, who has worked with The Rolling Stones, Grace Potter, Sonic Youth. He also recently released a seven-track companion EP titled “Worktapes.” The lead single “Twin Falls Idaho” is signature Pope, which captures his unique Americana storytelling skills and vocals that overlay a stripped-down, piano-led accompaniment.
Gomez, an English indie rock band from Southport, comprises blues, indie, alternative, rock, folk, psychedelic, and experimental. The trademarks of this transatlantic group include Ben Ottewell’s gritty vocals and bassist Paul “Blackie” Blackburn’s overdriven bass. With gutsy musical experimentation along with freewheeling lyrical styles, the band continues to evolve since its first album “Bring It On” won the Mercury Music Prize in 1998. Furthermore, the band’s versatility is fortified by three members who sing, four who compose songs and the whole five-piece ensemble’s skills on numerous traditional and electronic instruments.
A-Trak, Fri., June 22, 9:45 p.m.
The owner of Fool’s Gold recording label, A-Trak has been a mentor to numerous contemporary musicians including Kid Cudi, Danny Brown, and Flosstradamus. Last year, he established the Goldie Awards, a new kind of DJ battle that brought a sold-out house at New York City’s Brooklyn Steel and a judging panel that featured Soulection’s Whooligan, Mija, Diplo, Craze, Chuckie, Mannie Fresh and Just Blaze.
People Under The Stairs, Sat., June 23, 9:45 p.m.
St. Paul and the Broken Bones, Sun., June 24, 8:30 p.m.
Based in Birmingham, Alabama, St. Paul and the Broken Bones’ soul-infused rock pays respect to Sly Stone, David Bowie, and Prince. And have won many kudos for its second album “Sea of Noise” with songs that touch on the themes of redemption, hope, and salvation.
Tickets are $25 per night, visit artsfestamplified.com.
