Utah Stonewall Democrats saddened by convention delegates’ vote

Listen to this article

The Utah Stonewall Democrats executive board is saddened by the delegates’ decision to not support having a Democrat in the Utah Senate race. We feel it is the job of the Democratic party to support Democrats, and while we agree that Mike Lee is a danger to our state and country, we feel that party resources – including time and money – should be spent supporting Democrats.

As a marginalized community, this is not the first time that we have had to face feeling unheard or let down. We also acknowledge that there are caucus members who feel that the right decision was made. We welcome ALL members and allies of the LGBTQIA+ community and will continue to work for equity in Utah.

We hope that you will join us and help support our community and Democrats running for office at all levels of government. We urge you to work on supporting down-ballot candidates – help the candidates who might be hurt by the decision that was made. We hope you’ll take the opportunity to roll up your sleeves and help for this crucial midterm election. Whether it’s a small donation to the candidate of your choosing, a couple of hours phone banking, knocking on doors in at-risk districts, or even placing a sign in your yard, our small actions can make a difference. We must not throw up our hands and give up!

In solidarity, Jen Schwartz (chair), Sophia Hawes-Tingey (vice-chair), Becky Moss (treasurer), Kit Young (Recorder), Jandy Stelter (at-large), and Jahn Curran
