Wanda Sykes coming to Salt Lake City

Wanda Sykes announced her first major comedy tour in six years. Titled Please & Thank You, the comedian will perform on 29 dates across the United States, coming to Salt Lake’s Abravanel Hall on Oct. 12.

Sykes hasn’t toured since the COVID-19 pandemic but did appear sporadically in clubs and venues post-2020 to hone material for her most recent Netflix special, I’m an Entertainer, which premiered last May.

The special was nominated for a 2023 Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Special and focused on controversial topics, such as the 6 January insurrection, transgender rights, and the murders of Black Americans George Floyd and Elijah McClain.

Sykes’ career started as a writer on The Chris Rock Show, garnering the Primetime Emmy Award in 1999.

Her comedic prowess was further highlighted when Entertainment Weekly crowned her as one of the 25 funniest individuals in America in 2004. Sykes’ comedic flair extended beyond the writer’s desk to the small screen, with memorable recurring roles on hit series like CBS’ The New Adventures of Old Christine and HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm.

Sykes’ versatility shone through in her nominations for Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series, thanks to her impactful performances in ABC’s Black-ish and Amazon’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Presently, she graces screens in the Netflix original series The Upshaws and previously showcased her talents in the HBO Max comedy The Other Two and The Good Fight.

Sykes was on the big screen in Monster-in-Law, My Super Ex-Girlfriend, Evan Almighty, and License to Wed. Additionally, her vocal talents have brought animated characters to life in beloved films like Over the Hedge, Barnyard, Brother Bear 2, Rio, two sequels of the Ice Age franchise, and UglyDolls.

Sykes publicly came out as lesbian in November 2008 at a Las Vegas same-sex marriage rally against Proposition 8. She had married her wife, Alex Niedbalski, a month earlier. The couple became parents in April 2009 when Niedbalski gave birth to a pair of fraternal twins.
