The equal sign coupled with the interlocking rings logo was developed by Eye Byte Solutions to help promote the 2012 campaign for marriage equality in the State of Maryland. Endorsed by Governor Martin O’Malley, the statewide referendum permitting same-sex marriage was passed by voters on Nov. 6, 2012, marking the first time marriage rights had been extended to same-sex couples by popular vote.
