Draper Pride 2025: A Celebration of Love, Community, and Courage

On Monday, June 30th, from 6 to 8:00 p.m., the North Pavilion at Draper Park will come alive with celebration, connection, and pride as the community gathers for the fourth annual Draper Pride: Pride in the Park event.

This free and family-friendly evening aims to unite and uplift the local LGBTQIA+ community and their allies through friendship, resources, and visibility. With community leaders, local vendors, and heartfelt conversation in every corner, the event offers a powerful reminder that love and inclusion have a home in Draper.

The seeds of Draper Pride were planted four years ago, when Mason Hughes, then an intern at Equality Utah, was encouraged by a board member to bring a Pride celebration to his hometown. He turned to his mother, Keri Anderson Hughes, for help, and together, they made history.

“I was enthusiastic and dedicated to our cause… and I was nervous. Really nervous,” said Keri. “Would planning this event damage my relationships? Would it affect my standing with my church? Would angry people protest or oppose us? Would we be safe?”

Despite her fears, Keri knew that the discomfort she felt was only a small glimpse into the fear many LGBTQIA+ people live with every day. It was that realization and her fierce love for her son that pushed her forward.

“If I magnified my fears a thousand times, it still might not come close to the fear felt by LGBTQ+ people in our community when they contemplate the risks of living authentically,” she said.

The first Draper Pride was a beautiful success. Love flowed freely, neighbors connected, and for many, it was the first time they had felt truly seen in their own city.

Keri and Mason, emotionally spent from organizing the event, weren’t sure they could do it again the following year. But they didn’t have to. A group of determined mothers stepped forward, inspired by their children and the power of that first gathering. Among them were Stefani Dee Walker, Rebecca Uzelac Watson, Mary Squire, Camie Platt Hodlmair, Lori Davis, Stephanie Rowan-Bailey, and Julie Kennard. The team of volunteers has faithfully carried the torch ever since.

“These are brave mothers who stepped into the line of fire to fight for those they love,” said Keri.

Each year since, Draper Pride has grown, not only in size but in heart. With music, vendors, information booths, and opportunities to connect, this event continues to offer a safe and welcoming space for people of all identities and backgrounds.

Whether you’re a longtime supporter, a new ally, or a member of the LGBTQIA+ community yourself, you are invited. You don’t need to live in Draper to attend. All are welcome.

“Come meet the vendors, meet your neighbors, see what it feels like to take a deep breath in a space permeated by love, safety, and inclusion,” Keri said. “I think we could all use that right now.”
